The best man not only offers moral support, but also is the groom's right hand man in organizing activities and handling important duties....the one he will depend on. It is his responsibility to assist the groom in any way he can throughout the wedding and wedding planning process.
The best man cannot be over organized. It is a great honor that the groom chooses his brother, a close relative, or his best friend to be a part of this special occasion.
Weddings are very big on symmetry. Remember to pay close attention. Invariably someone forgets his cummerbund, stays, cufflinks, black socks, or shoes. The cummerbund is worn with the pleats going up.
At the rehearsal, listen to the instructions of the officiant. You may have to assist in the last minute details on the wedding day.
The best man assists the groom with wedding details such as accommodations for out-of-town groomsmen and ushers.

Wedding Rehearsal

makes sure that all ushers arrive on time for the rehearsal
organizes the usher's activities for the day of the wedding and reviews the duties with them

the best man is the toastmaster at the rehearsal dinner and may be required to organize those wishing to toast the bride & groom
Wedding Ceremony
keeps the groom on schedule
makes sure that the ushers arrive at the ceremony site on time (one hour before the ceremony) for pictures and well ahead of the guests and the start of the ceremony
arrives at the ceremony site one hour before the wedding for photographs
makes sure all ushers receive boutonnieres.......have someone demonstrate the proper positioning of the boutonnieres
keeps track of time
holds the bride's wedding ring, handing it to the groom at the appropriate time
escorts the maid or matron of honor in the wedding ceremony recession
drives groom to the ceremony site and sees that he is properly dressed before the wedding
brings marriage license to the wedding ceremony
witnesses the signing of the marriage license along with the maid of honor
gets fees from the groom and sees that the officiant, organist, etc are discreetly paid
drives newlyweds to the reception if they are not using a limo, horse and carriage or other hired services
Wedding Reception
assists the ushers in seating the guests properly at the reception
sits to to the bride's right at the bridal table
offers the first toast at the reception, usually before the dinner begins
reads telegrams aloud
assumes the role of Master of Ceremonies if requested
dances with the maid or matron of honor during the bridal party dance
mingles with guests and makes introductions
holds the basket or top hat for the groom during the dollar dance (if the couple is having one)
helps the groom change into traveling clothes, making sure that the groom has everything for the honeymoon, including all luggage
may send champagne and flowers to the honeymoon suite
in charge of transportation for the bride and groom to leave the reception
drives the newlyweds to their car, honeymoon suite, or the airport if they are not using their car
Holds the luggage under lock and key until the bride and groom depart from the reception
After the Wedding
oversees the return of the tuxedo rentals for the groom and the ushers, making sure everything is there, they are returned in condition, and on time
Assists the maid of honor in transporting gifts to the bride and groom's home
